INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

For this assignment, we were required to develop an instructable infographic derived from a selected video from the Pasta Grannies YouTube channel.

We needed to analyse the video, break down the cooking and preparation process, and present it clearly in an infographic format. Additionally, we were encouraged to reflect each grandmother’s personality and the uniqueness of their dish as part of the storytelling.

After researching several videos, I chose this pasta recipe as my reference. I was drawn to how detailed and structured the process was, yet it resulted in a simple and comforting homemade dish.

To start the ideation phase, I watched the video multiple times and carefully extracted the steps, rewriting them into clear instructional points.

Next, I explored references on Pinterest and Google Images to understand how food infographics are structured visually. Below are several examples that inspired my approach. I was particularly interested in their clarity, flow, and how information was segmented effectively.

Color Palette

I selected a cream colour as a base to make it feel like a nostalgic or vintage aesthetic. Then red and green to enhance more of the colour of the food since bolognese is full of colour red later on.

Sketches & Idea Exploration

I began with two rough sketches to map out the layout. At first i misunderstood that we could make a instant noodle guide instead of pasta recipe, thus i have the second layout as instant noodles.

Digitalization

I then proceeded to create the visual assets required for the poster.

MOTION GRAPHIC - FINAL PROJECT

Requirement

  • Maximum duration: 60 seconds
  • Format: 720p (1280 × 720 pixels), H264/mp4
  • Must be published on YouTube
  • The animation should reflect the aesthetics and narrative of the poster using motion, sound effects, and music

For this project, I teamed up with Samuel Keane (0376236). We both then agreed to choose his infographic poster to do the animation. Before starting in After Effects, We separated all elements into individual layers to ensure a smoother animation workflow.

We then agreed to do the moodboard and storyboard as our first step:

For the animation, Samuel agreed on doing the intro, and the outro including 3 steps of the recipe, while i do the animation of the ingredients and the first 3 steps of the recipe.

This project was relatively straightforward, and I relied on YouTube tutorials for transition techniques and creative ideas. Mr Martin’s lessons, especially on using null objects, were particularly helpful.

The animation took approximately 48 hours to complete. The tools and effects used include:

  • Scale
  • Opacity
  • Rotation
  • Position
  • Null Object

FEEDBACK

The visuals are well executed, but the layout should be cleaner. For motion graphic, overall is good but theres some parts of the graphics looked low res.

REFLECTION

Throughout this project, I gained valuable experience in both time management and workflow organization. I learned the importance of planning ahead, especially when working with animation.

Patience played a significant role, particularly when dealing with Adobe After Effects. I also developed the habit of saving my work frequently (Ctrl + S), which proved essential.

This project made me reflect on whether I want to pursue digital animation further. Despite the challenges and occasional technical difficulties, I found the process enjoyable and rewarding.

Overall, perseverance and patience were key to completing this project. Even though it was demanding, I appreciated both the struggles and the satisfaction that came with it.
