WEEK 2 (Kinetic Typography)

Fig. 1.2 Week 2 Lecture Notes

During Week 2, Mr Martin introduced us to kinetic typography using After Effects. This session was very useful, as the techniques learned could be directly applied to our group project.

WEEK 3 (Motion Graphic Chart)

Fig. 1.4 Week 3 Lecture Notes

In Week 3, based on the Google Sheet provided by Mr Martin, I was assigned to Category C, which required creating a motion graphic bar chart.

Below is the animated bar chart I produced during the practical session:

WEEK 4 (Vector / Character Animation)

Fig. 1.7 Week 4 Lecture Notes

In Week 4, Mr Martin taught us how to animate vectors and characters in After Effects. The process began with organizing layers in Illustrator before importing them into After Effects.

We applied basic transform properties such as position, scale, and rotation to create bouncing effects. In addition, we explored more advanced techniques such as the wiggle expression and puppet pin tool.

PROJECT 2.1 - GROUP PROJECT

Kinetic Typography

For this group project, we were required to create an animated lyric video. We had the freedom to choose any song. After discussion, each member suggested their preferred options, and we eventually selected “Stateside'' By PinkPanthress. We were inspired by the official animated lyric video, which had an engaging and visually appealing concept.

We then divided the workload by assigning different sections such as verses and chorus to each member.

I then began animating my assigned section in After Effects.

Once all members completed their sections, we uploaded the files to Google Drive. Our team leader then compiled all the clips into the final video.

FEEDBACK

Week 4 – Kinetic Typography
Good but we used too much original video clips from the original music video

REFLECTION

I really enjoyed working on these exercises and practical sessions. Despite the number of tasks, I am glad I was able to complete all of them. Through Mr Martin’s lessons, I discovered useful techniques in After Effects, particularly the null object and puppet tool, which made the workflow more efficient.

Although the kinetic typography project was quite demanding, I now understand its importance. It helped me become more familiar with After Effects, making it easier to approach the final project with confidence.

Overall, these practical sessions increased my interest in both Illustrator and After Effects, and I found the learning experience both challenging and rewarding.
