LECTURES

Introduction

Visual communication involves using design to deliver meaningful messages to a specific audience. Therefore, the design needs to be carefully planned and executed. For successful communication through design, it is essential to understand and apply the fundamental elements and principles of design.

Elements of design would be such as:

Point

  • The most basic element in design.
  • Acts as a repeating mark that creates a line.
  • As points move through space, they give rise to various two- and three-dimensional shapes and forms.

Line

  • Lines can be dynamic or stationary, strong or gentle, fluid or mechanical.
  • They show direction and outline the boundaries of shapes and spaces.
  • Lines can be combined to convey light and shadow effects and to create patterns and textures.

Shape

  • Shapes emerge when a line or multiple lines enclose an area or when there is a noticeable change in value.
  • Shapes can be either geometric (such as circles, squares, triangles) or organic in nature.

Form

  • A shape refers to a two-dimensional area, while a form is a three-dimensional shape.
  • When a form encloses space, the resulting enclosed area is referred to as volume.

Texture

  • Texture relates to the surface qualities of an object.
  • It can be experienced either physically through touch or visually.
  • Textures can be categorized as actual texture (which you can feel) or implied texture (which is suggested visually).

Space

  • Refers to the area within a design, both positive and negative.
  • Space can be manipulated to create a sense of depth and dimension.

Color

  • Color is a visual result of light wavelengths, either transmitted through a transparent material or reflected off a surface.
  • It is the combination of light wavelengths that the human eye detects and interprets from a reflected source.

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 1

1. Gestalt Theory

This theory is based on the idea that humans naturally perceive patterns, structures, elements visually. Starting from how human eyes can perceive shapes as a single united form rather than separate simpler elements involved. In conclusion, gestalt theory helps guide how we structure and present visual information to make it more intuitive and easier for people to interpret.

Principle of similarity: A link that is created between elements of a similar nature. Occurs when the human eyes perceive similar elements that are similar in color, shape, size, or other visual traits are perceived as belonging together.

Principles of Continuation:  When a continuous flow of visual elements follows through paths, lines and curves of a design.

Principles of Closure: A complete shape that is preferred to be perceived by the human eye. If the visual elements are not complete, a complete shape can be perceived by filling in missing visual information by the user.

Principles of Proximity: The process of related design elements that can be placed together to become one visual unit that gives structure to a layout, in which unrelated items will be spaced apart.

Principle of Figure/Ground:  When objects are instinctively perceived as being either in the foreground or the background.

Law of Symmetry & Order:  When symmetric elements tend to be perceived as a unified group.

2. Contrast

Contrast is the juxtaposition of strongly dissimilar elements, it  provides visual interest, emphasizes a point and expresses content. In this photography work, contrast is shown by the different shades of black and white, having the subjects at the front owning the most contrast as the main focus of this work.

3. Emphasis

Emphasis is used to create dominance and focus through color , shape and value can be used to achieve dominance. In this photography work, emphasis is shown by the most vibrantly colorful among the other subjects .

4. Balance

Balance is crucial for distribution of visual weight in a design work, it is the visual equilibrium causes the appearance of balance.

Symmetrical Balance:   Has equal "weight" on equal sides of a centrally placed fulcrum.

Asymmetrical Balance: Unequal visual weight on each side. One side shows the dominant element of the composition while the other side is balanced with a lesser focal point.

Artist: Heinz Schulz-Neudamm

5. Repetition

Repetition creates rhythm and pattern within a design work which would look active and enriches surface interest. In addition, variety is crucial to avoid monotony while repetition is used. In this artwork, this principle is shown by the repetitive pattern of the design.

The Grammar of Ornament (1856)

Artist: Owen Jones

6. Movement

Movement occurs when objects are perceived to be moving in a visual image through a composition. It  can be created and visualized by using shapes, forms, lines, and curves. In this artwork, movement is shown by the flow of speed by the moving subjects such as the smokes and air that are painted in this work.

7. Harmony & Unity

Harmony is the sense of your designs fitting together in the same theme, aesthetic and vibe, which involves selection of elements sharing a common trait. In this artwork, harmony and unity are shown by the matching theme of colors that create the same peaceful vibe of the environment painted without anything clashing.

8. Symbol

A symbol is represented in a visual of shape, sign and object. A symbol can convey information that is equivalent to one or more sentences of text. In this artwork, this principle is shown by drawings and graphics that are accompanied by symbols that are meant to represent this painting as a whole aka the Zodiac.

9. Word and Image

This principle remains crucial to suitable and relevant image is important to relate to a concept and a brand, in which typography is a part of the design work to convey the message and concept of the artwork. In this artwork, words and images are shown by the drawing of the character is accompanied by the graphic of Japanese words that are depicting his action, such as in Japan, the sound effect of eating vigorously is called バクバク (bak bak).

Give A Man A Mask & He'll Become His True Self (2016)

Artist name: senfromoz

Size: 80cm x 100cm

Medium: Digital

Description:

This is the digital artwork that I have a keen interest in putting in which I've personally discovered a few years ago when it's going viral around the Tumbler platform in 2016. This digital artwork is based on the game Persona 5 as you can feel the similarity of the mascot/main character of the game by looking at the mask. After discovering, researching and learning about design principles, there's a few I can take from this artwork, such as Balance , Contrast , and Word & Imaging .

  • Balance:

Balance is the first principle I'd notice from this artwork, such as the drawings are mirroring, the angle of curve of the words are too. Here, I'd draw crucial lines to depict the principle that is happening in this digital work.

  • Contrast:
Harmony & Unity is another principle I've noticed from this artwork, mainly by the color palette chosen for this artwork that only consists of 3 colors: Red, Black, White. Therefore, these colors have created a strong solid vibe aka depicting a strong riot, and violent energy that is coming from this artwork.

  • Word & Imaging:

For me, Word & Imaging has been the most obvious principle for this artwork, the typography style and the text itself is depicting the illustration of this artwork. Such as the sentence itself "Give A Man A Mask & He'll Become His True Self" is accompanied by a character wearing a mask in a rather vicious way which totally fits the sentences chosen.

FEEDBACKS

Week 1:  We had a briefing regarding the module with Ms. Jinchi and more details about the class with Mr. Vinod.

Week 2:

General:  Mr. Vinod's sessions are specifically to receive feedback from our blog progress for groups of people in separate sessions.

Specific : Mr. Vinod has given direct feedback to my blog's progress which I've done most of the part of the assignment, one of the missing elements is that documentation requires more explanation to be preferable to the criteria.

Week 3:

General: Mr. Vinod's sessions are specifically to receive feedback from our blog progress. This time, it is more to the art that we chose for the main focus of this assignment.

Specific: Mr. Vinod has given me direct feedback on the art I chose for the assignment, which is researching the design principle elements that are included into the artwork I chose.

REFLECTION

Experience
Starting for the first 3 weeks to this module, we're introduced to this assignment, whereas we are being taught about design principles that an artwork can contain. After learning these, I realized how important these principles could affect an artwork, from the composition to the color theory. Moreover, I've been having fun researching as a part of my learning experience for this assignment, such as sharing an artwork of each principle is presented in my blogger which definitely helps me understand a lot better.

Observation
Entering the part where we have to have a keen observation into this topic specifically, I learned that each principle plays its role well without clashing with the artwork. The more I deepen into it, the more I learn the importance of these principles, it's very crucial to the elements and the nature of an artwork can illustrate itself. Such as one of the design principles I researched the most about, contrast plays a heavy role in color theory, it can be a very vibrant or a soft color, that alone can change the vibe of a whole artwork.

Findings
After discovering and gaining further knowledge about design principles, it taught me a lot how a single principle plays a crucial role in an artwork, it pushed me on how to improve my artworks, to make it more visually appealing.
