TASK 3

RECAP

In Task 3,  In Task 3, we're continuing to the process of developing a design based on one of the two sketches I made from Task 2. We are required to incorporate our understanding of design principles into the development of our concept and final piece.

Artwork's format requirements:

  • Size : A4
  • File type: JPEG
  • 200 words rationale of the work

This is the artwork I chose:

Give A Man A Mask & He'll Become His True Self (2016)

Artist name: senfromoz

Size: 80cm x 100cm

Medium: Digital

This is the sketch I chose for the final design:

Fig. 3.1 Sketches

In this sketch I made, I'm focusing on the objects such as the mask that the character is holding and the texts/quote as the main emphasis here. I played with the perspective where it appears from the lower angle instead of eye level angle which helps a lot emphasize the objects I want to point out.

Continuing the sketch:

Fig. 3.2 Process of detailing the sketch in Adobe Illustrator

I used Adobe illustrator to detail/lineart my sketch to form the final look of my artwork. Apart from working on the character, I of course also have to design the typography contained in the poster that is in progress at the moment.

During the progress of illustrating the final draft, I made the composition from symmetrical to asymmetrical, it's so that I can freely put more into this artwork.

Final draft of lineart:

Coloring progress:

Fig. 3.6 Color palette and Coloring progress

In the coloring progress, I used the same color palette as the original artwork that is consist of red, black and grey/white. From there, I'd develop by rendering the colors, but during the process i originally go for more colors other the 3. As time experimenting with colors goes on, I then stick back to my original idea which is the 3 color palette, here's the cancelled process:

RATIONALE

For this artwork specifically, i have been out of the box since this is the kind of artstyle I'm not so much of a fond of. I'd experiment a lot with the linearts and the details i put on. The elements i put in are emphasizing both in color and the graphic itself. Compared to the original artwork, I can say that mine looks like there's more going on as i made the character appear and more of the side graphics surrounding the main focus to create more drama which is the whole point of this artwork. Not only do the graphics or the drawing that matters, the typography or texts involved too as it is one of the other biggest elements contained in the original artwork.

Design Principles contained:
This artwork heavily focuses on contrast, and balance (asymmetrical). Contrast, the 3 color palette being the only colors to represent the drama that is happening in the artwork. Red, being the source of energy of the vibe. White, the base of the color to showcase the graphics. And finally black, the shadow to create more depth within the artwork. Balance, specifically asymmetrical, this helps shows the perspective of an angle from below except that it's also bent to the right that results to asymmetric angle, however it helps emphasizing more of the objects and graphics that is involved in the artwork.

The meaning of the design:
To start with, the quote or the text "Give A Man A Mask and He'll become His True Self" in the artwork/poster is the huge indicator of the meaning of design. Based on my artwork, I'd show more of the character's appearance holding a mask whilst his spectacles/glasses are dropped, the spectacles being the most common object or accessory represent the original or general identity of the character, on the other hand, the mask represents an accessory that hides one identity. This indicates that the character proudly dropping the spectacles and replacing it's position with the mask is now switching to his new personality or rather his true self.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
General: Mr. Vinod is reviewing our work in Task 3 where he'll share his feedback regarding our progress in continuing our artwork from the sketches in Task 2.

Specific: Mr. Vinod shared his thoughts in mine work, he shared a few suggestions to make my artwork look better.

Week 7
General: Mr. Vinod revewing and share his thoughts regarding our final progress of our work.

Specific: Mr. Vinod has given his thoughts on my work, my progress this week is pretty much about finalizing and stepping into the coloring process which so far Mr. Vinod has agreed to.

REFLECTION

Experience
During the final weeks of this module that is accompanied by this assignment, I've had a lot of fun experimenting and draw freely according to the artwork i chose. With the knowledge of design principle, it definitely widen my range in ideas within my work in this assignment.

Observation
As I delve deeper into this topic, I've realized that each principle contributes effectively without interfering with the artwork. The more I explore, the more I understand the significance of these principles, which are essential for allowing the elements and nature of an artwork to shining. And with this assignment, I can put my knowledge to the test starting from the sketch, to the detailed graphic and finally the colors.

Findings

After discovering and gaining further knowledge about design principles, it taught me a lot how a single principle plays a crucial role in an artwork, it pushed me on how to improve my artworks, to make it more visually appealing.
